Strategy for Prevention of Recurrence of Superficial Bladder Cancer

Summary:

Strategies for the prevention of superficial bladder cancer recurrence after TUR-Bt are discussed in relation to each cause of the recurrence. Implantation of tumor cells, coexisting dysplasia and CIS, and residual microlesion are theoretically able to be eliminated by intravesical chemotherapy or BCG instillation adjacent to the time of TUR-Bt.

It is important to prevent new tumor development after the passage of a certain length of time subsequent to TUR-Bt. In this paper the “initiated cell theory” is proposed for the explanation of “new tumor development”, and it is discussed whether BCG is effective in preventing the development of new tumor and if any other new treatment modalities have such possibilities.
