Abstract
Two minutes after maximal treadmill exercise using the Bruce protocol, venous blood was obtained for serum lactate measurement from 309 patients aged 4 to 20 years. While the mean serum lactate values increased from 9.5 mmol 1-1 at age 4 to 5 years to 12.1 mmol l-1 at age 16 to 20 years, values over 12 mmol 1-1 did occur in young children, and there was no clear separation of lactate values by age or sex. Previous investigators emphasizing low serum lactate values in young children may not have had their children perform enough anaerobic work.
