Abstract

Many myths exist around the topic placebo within the medical society and its underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. Contrary to clinical trials in which placebos play a vital role it is impossible to clearly identify the placebo effect’s contribution to treatment efficacy in clinical practice using multidimensional treatment such as physiotherapy. In order to maximise the effect of their treatments, physiotherapists should however consider the findings of placebo research. Along with other suggestions this research reinforces the importance of creating a positive, productive relationship between patient and clinician.
