Abstract
Encephalitis lethargica is presented as an exemplaric neuropsychiatric illness. Its
history, the symptoms and the diagnostics, as well as its pathology and therapy are
illuminated. Finally, specific problems and questions with regard to encephalitis
lethargica are discussed: the question of a viral genesis and of a probable reappearance
of the apparently disappeared encephalitis lethargica, the problems concerning the
account for the neurological and psychiatric symptoms, and the question of role and
function of the basal ganglia.
Zusammenfassung
Die Encephalitis lethargica wird als ein exemplarisches Beispiel einer neuropsychiatrischen
Erkrankung vorgestellt. Es werden die Historie, die Symptome und die Diagnostik sowie
die Pathologie und Therapie beleuchtet. Abschließend werden Probleme und Fragen, die
die Encephalitis lethargica aufwirft, kurz diskutiert: Hierbei handelt es sich um
die Frage der viralen Genese und des möglichen Wiederauftauchens der scheinbar verschwundenen
Erkrankung, der Frage nach der methodologischen Erfassung der breiten neurologischen
und psychiatrischen Symptomatik sowie der Frage nach der Rolle und Funktion der Basalganglien.
