Touristen, die an Abdominaltyphus erkranken, verbringen durchschnittlich sieben Tage im Krankenhaus. Diese unerwünschte Ferienverlängerung droht Reisenden immer häufiger. Gründe dafür sind vermehrte Reisen nach Südasien und der Vormarsch der dort besonders häufig auftretenden multi-resistenten S. Typhi Bakterien [21], [23]. Heute ist die Mehrzahl dieser Typhuserreger bereits gegen mindestens ein bekanntes Antibiotikum resistent [1], [12], [19]. Impfen tut daher mehr denn je not, denn Abdominaltyphus verläuft ohne wirksame Antibiotikabehandlung in 10-20 % aller Fälle tödlich [4].
