Variegata led to the isolation of seven alkaloids: reserpinine, majdine, akuammicine, strictosidine lactam, pseudoakuammigine, akuammine, and a new alkaloid tentatively assigned as 10-hydroxycathofoline. The yellowish and green laminar sections of the leaves did not differ in their alkaloid profile.
