Abstract
The water extract of Kosso, (Hagenia abyssinica, GMELIN) as used in traditional Ethiopian medicine, was tested on the isolated guinea pig ileum employing acetylcholine, histamine and barium chloride as spasmogens. The effect of all three spasmogens was antagonized by Kosso in a concentration range of 0.05-0.2 ml/10 ml of bathing fluid.
The mechanism of antagonism was non-competitive. This smooth muscle inhibitory effect might contribute to the taenicidal action of Kosso.
