The extracts of HK, the barks of Magnolia obovata and aerial parts of Perilla frutescens var. acuta clearly inhibited the laryngeal reflex in cats. The HK extract also inhibited the locomotor activity in rats, and prolonged the sleeping time induced by hexobarbital sodium in mice. These findings suggest that HK action of removing the foreign body sensation in the throat is mainly due to inhibition of the laryngeal reflex.
