Abstract

The occurrence of quaternary alkaloids in Tinospora (and Parabaena) species (Menispermaceae) has been studied. The main components were generally the protoberberine bases berberine and palmatine, with jatrorrhizine an occasional minor constituent, and the aporphine base magnoflorine. Choline was also often present. Only magnoflorine was detected in the Parabaena material examined.
