Abstract

A non-sucrose portion of the juice from the stalks of Saccharum officinarum prominently diminished blood sugar level in mice. Activity-guided fractionation of this portion yielded six glycans, saccharans A, B, C, D, E and F. These glycans exerted remarkable hypoglycemic actions in normal and alloxan-produced hyperglycemic mice.
