Abstract

The rhizomes of Costus spiralis contain four furostanole glycosides which after hydrolysis yielded diosgenin, glucose and rhamnose. The content of diosgenin was 0.43%. Additionally free sterols and sterols bound in the form of esters and glycosides were identified as a mixture of cholesterol, campestanol, campesterol, stigmasterol, sitosterol and pollinasterol. The total sterol contents (0.13%) and the amounts of the different forms of sterols were determined.
