This article discusses the psychological symptoms of overtraining and the relationship
between staleness and exercise dependence. Staleness may be prevented by monitoring
the mood state of the individual so that, if necessary, appropriate action may be
taken to taper the volume of training and maximize performance. The criterion for
exercise dependence is difficult to define and some suggestions are made on clarifying
the diagnosis and future research in this area.
