Summary
Since 1974 about 6000 flexible bronchoscopies have been performed for early postoperative diagnostic and therapeutic reasons. Bronchoscopic suction is easy, quick, highly effective and does not provoke any epithelial changes.
Indications for immediate bronchoscopic suction are suspected aspiration, deterioration in blood gas values, changes in the chest x-ray. Every ICU should be equipped with a flexible bronchoscope for immediate use.
