Summary

GSH levels were determined in rat pancreatic islets after incubation of batches of 5 islets in 1 ml medium for 90 min in the absence or presence of glucose (5.6 mM) with and without addition of leucine (10 mM). In the presence of glucose, but not in its absence, leucine significantly elevated the islet content of GSH.

It is suggested that this increase is due to the rise of the NADPH/NADP ratio induced by leucine and that insulin secretion triggered by leucine may at least in part be related to its effect on GSH.
