Summary

A large two-centre randomised controlled trial of Nd:YAG photocoagulation in acute upper alimentary bleeding is described. Prospective stratification of the nature of the bleeding point (presence or absence of stigmata of recent haemorrhage) has been a fundamental aim to reduce bias, and matching of other risk factors has been carried out. This study demonstrates that with this method Nd:YAG laser photocoagulation reduces the rebleeding rate from those with SRH, emergency surgery, and mortality.
