Summary

Patients with epilepsy need antiepileptic drugs because the traditional medications are not sufficiently effective, cause frequent adverse effects, and seizures do relapse in about 40 % of the patients when the drugs are withdrawn following complete seizure control for several years.

Zusammenfassung

Patienten mit Epilepsie brauchen neue Antiepileptika, weil die alten Medikamente nicht ausreichend wirksam sind, häufig unerwünschte Wirkungen zeigen, und bei Absetzen auch nach mehrjähriger Anfallsfreiheit bei etwa 40 % der Fälle Anfallsrezidive auftreten.
