Epidermal growth factor during labour in Nigerian women

Objective: To investigate if Epidermal growth factor (EGF) changes in amniotic fluid during labour in Nigerian Women.

Setting: Tertiary Hospital and Prenatal Diagnosis centre in Lagos Nigeria.

Study design: To confirm previous report in Caucasians, we examine amniotic fluid epidermal growth factor in samples collected in n=30 patient in active labour and in another group n=30 but delivered by Caesarian Section (C/S). All patients were at term (37–40 weeks of gestation).

Results: There was a significant elevation (p<0.05) of Epidermal growth factor in the amniotic fluid from women in active labour (0.82±0.09ng/ml) confirm to the other group (0.66±0.08ng/ml)

Conclusion:

From our results Epidermal growth factor may have a stimulating effect in Nigerian women on parturition.
