Abstract
A series of 18 alkaloids with structural similarities to emetine have been tested for their in vitro activity against Entamoeba histolytica (NIH 200) and guinea-pig ear keratinocytes. The alkaloids contain either two benzyltetrahydroisoquinoline, two tetrahydro-β-carboline, or mixed benzyltetrahydroisoquinoline/tetrahydro-β-carboline moieties and are of the emetine, tubulosine, and ochrolifuanine class of alkaloids. The results are discussed on the basis of structure-activity relationships.
