Abstract

Two triterpenoidal saponins having phytolaccagenin as the aglycone were isolated from the roots of Phytolacca esculenta (Phytolaccaceae). The structures of two new saponins, esculentoside I and esculentoside N, were established to be 3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]-28-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-phytolaccagenin and 3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→4)-β-D-xylopyranosyl(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]-28-O-β-D-glucopyranosylphytolaccagenin, respectively, on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical evidence.
