Inflammatory cytokine IL-1β is the key factor which leads to the secondary brain damages e.g. hydrocephalus and neuron death after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). In this study we focus on the effect of the natural product QKL (consisting of Radix Scutellariae, Fructus Gardeniae, cholic acid, Radix notoginseng, Concha Margaritifera Usta*) to this cytokine. We established the rat model with collagenase-induced intracerebral hemorrhage. The rat model was pretreated with 3ml/kg QKL and then injected with the same dose once every day through the rat tail vein. After 48h the ELISA was used to test the level of the IL-1β in the cerebral homogenate. The results were expressed as mean values±standard deviation. It was observed that the IL-1β level was markedly reduced.

This study supports the potential role of QKL on inhibiting IL-1β, what's more, it also indicates that QKL is noteworthy to protect the neuron from secondary damages after ICH.
