The accuracy of working length measurement on root canal instruments fixed in an endodontic
handpiece was examined under various conditions. Three different apex locators were
used.
The contact took place either directly at the clip fastened on the file or by a cable
connection at the handpiece, either using electrical or air driven motor and either
using an unmoved or a rotating instrument. Working length measurement by a cable connection
at the handpiece was possible without any problems. The use of electrical or air driven
motor did not influence the measurement nor did the apex locator used. A bit of overinstrumentation
resulted in motion whereas measurement with fixed instruments was rather too short.
