Significance

Acenoid structures, especially pentacene, have demonstrated the highest charge mobilities to date in organic field. Effect transistors and new analogues, including polymeric structures, are likely to be the active elements in new organic electronics technologies. This contribution describes a general synthesis of a number of heterocyclic acene analogues from readily available starting materials.
