Abstract

Innovation is an important stimulus of economy, also of the health care system. Innovations are not feasible without research but will not have the expected impact unless their results are appropriately applied in day-to-day health care. The developer of an innovation bears the risk to market his innovation. The public bears the risk to raise the costs of health care due to inappropriate use of innovations. Both of these risks can be controlled by a new research branch which we call Outcomes Research (OR). The goal of our presentation is to justify the need of OR, to distinguish OR from other areas of research, and finally to demonstrate differences in the goals, methods and gained information of OR and other research areas.
