Abstract

After bariatric surgery, regular supplementation of protein, vitamins, micronutrients and trace minerals is essential, particularly after malabsorptive procedures such as the gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion with or without Duodenal Switch. If, postoperatively, clinical signs of malnutration are not recognized in time, relevant complications can occur. This is the reason why the supplementation of these nutrients - depending on the bariatric procedure performed - is absolutely necessary. In this paper, reference to the most common postoperative nutrient deficiencies associated with each of the bariatric surgical procedures will be reviewed, along with symptoms and consequences of these nutrient deficits and recommendations for daily supplementation.
