Summary

Great Yellow Gentian

For most people Gentian is a synonym for a typical alpine flower. Great Yellow Gentian or Bitter Wort - Gentiana lutea L. -, probably the most important medicinal plant species of the Gentianaceae family, is indigenous in almost all middle and southern European mountainous areas, from Portugal to Asia Minor. Since the second century B.C. it has been well known and documented as a medicinal plant used for various diseases. Although Gentianae radix Ph. Eur. is not any longer used for most of these formerly reported indications it still is one of our most important bitter drugs widely used as gastric stimulant with sialogogue and cholagogue properties. Even more, the root is used in the liquor and spirit industry where it is a main ingredient in aperitifs, digestives, bitter liquors and - mainly in alpine regions - the basis of the traditional »Enzianschnaps« (Gentian brandy). The increasing demand of Gentian roots has threatened the species leading to red data book listings in many countries or even to its full protection. At the same time the cultivation of Yellow Gentian was investigated and meanwhile successfully introduced in several regions.
