The rate of Helicobacter pylori infection in closed communities has not been investigated
so far in Hungary.
The aim of the study was to investigate the Helicobacter pylori infection rate at a boarding
school.
Patients and method: 39 boarders (aged from 10–20 years, mean age: 14.7 years) and 16 educators (mean
age: 43.5 years) were screened for Helicobacter pylori with C13 urea breath test.
Results: 22 of 39 boarders and 8 of 16 educators proved to be Helicobacter pylori positive.
One boy was infected with bacterium during the observation period. All of the boarders
received one-week triple eradication therapy. Out of them 18 terminated up to now.
The eradication therapy was successful in 14 boarders.
Conclusions: 1. The infection rate of educators approached to that of the average Hungarian adult
population. 2. The infection rate in closed community of children was much higher
upon the date than expected in the age matched population.
