Background: Based on literature data morphological polyps can be verified in 1.7–3.9% of gastroscopies. According to the analogy of colon polyp transformation from adenomatous form to carcinoma the possible transformation rate of gastric polyps from hyperplastic to adenomatous form and carcinoma is about 18%. In our work we give the latest results present of our previous investigations highlighting the importance of gastric polyp transformation.

Patients and method: Between 1999–2004 gastric polypectomy were performed in 102 cases of 84 patients.

In most patients the gastroscopies were planned, after the first histological result of polyps and multiple biopsies or polypectomies were performed. The transformation of polyps from hyperplasiogenic to adenoma and carcinoma was detected.

Results: In 5 patients the histological result showed carcinoma and various benign polyps simultanously. In 2 cases in situ carcinoma, 2 cases of adenocarcinoma, 1 case with malignant transformations were found in the the stomach beside hyperplasiogenic polyps, tubular and villous adenomas by the gastroscopy at the same time. Simultaneous occurrence of benign polyps was even more frequent.

Conclusion: Malignant transformation is a well known attitude of colon polyps. In cases of gastric polyps less paper reported on partial or complete simultaneous malignant transformations. Based on our results with common localisations of malignant and benign gastric polyps, we would like to call attention to the importance of biopsies followed up by polypectomy in classified cases to prevent malignant transformation of the polyps.
