Summary

Vertical augmentation of the alveolar crest using membranes has not yet been established as routine procedure and offers a number of open questions. The space making function of membranes in particular seems to be underestimated until now. Based on a clinical example, minimal invasive augmentation of an anterior mandibular alveolar crest is described using odontoscopically assisted tunnel preparation and a rigid titanium barrier.

The new technique may influence the augmentative procedures in various alveolar sites in the future, because the concept is based on realization of well-known surgical principles using a flapless approach and a secure space making device.
