Abstract

Zinc is essential for all fast proliferating cells in the human body, especially for the immune system. All kinds of different immune cells show malfunctions, when a zinc deficiency is present. Such a deficiency results in an insufficiently functioning immune system with an increased susceptibility to infections, bacterial as well as viral infections, and a prolonged disease phase. An adequate uptake of zinc can restore the reduced immune performance, or if used preventively, it can prevent such a reduced performance from the beginning. Different studies support the apprehension, that many people show only a marginal zinc supply and that a latent zinc deficiency is present relatively often.
