Von Angle in die Zukunft: Ein Ausblick

Die frühesten Kieferorthopäden entwickelten unser Fachgebiet auf der gemeinsamen Grundlage von Kunst und von Wissenschaft. Die rasche Entwicklung von Materialien und Fertigungstechniken befreite die Praktiker bald von der Notwendigkeit, ihre Apparaturen selbst anzufertigen. Heutzutage profitiert die Kieferorthopädie von diesen Entwicklungen und die Bewerberzahlen für die Ausbildung zum Facharzt sind so hoch wie nie zuvor. Auf der anderen Seite sind einige Trends zu beobachten, die unsere Zukunft gefährden könnten. Kunst und Wissenschaft werden allmählich durch eine Marketing-orientierte Kieferorthopädie ersetzt. Diese Entwicklung wird von der falschen Voraussetzung begleitet, dass in den Vereinigten Staaten eine zu geringe Zahl an Kieferorthopäden praktizieren würden. Diese angebliche „Unterversorgung” hat zusammen mit einem gestiegenen Interesse an der Ausbildung zum Facharzt Begehrlichkeiten auf Seiten von Gesellschaften und Verbänden geweckt. Der vorliegende Beitrag beleuchtet die Zusammenhänge zwischen diesen Faktoren und diskutiert mögliche Folgen einer Kieferorthopädie à la Donald Trump.

Early orthodontists established our specialty based on the principles of art and science. Rapid advances in materials and technology then freed practitioners from manufacturing the appliance. Today orthodontists are enjoying the benefits of this progress and applications for residency training in orthodontics are at an all time high. However, some disturbing trends threaten our future. Art and science are slowly being replaced by the business of orthodontics. A related issue is the misconception that there is a shortage of orthodontic practitioners in the United States. This “shortage” along with increased demand for orthodontic training has stimulated corporate interest in orthodontic education. This paper discusses the interaction of these factors and the potential impact of “Donald Trump” orthodontics.
