A consensus guideline was worked out by clinical biochemists, clinical pharmacologists and psychiatrists of the AGNP (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Neuropsychopharmakolgie und Pharmakopsychiatrie), which should help clinical psychiatrists, practitioners and heads of laboratories implicated in psychotropic drug analysis to optimize the use of TDM of psychotropic drugs. This AGNP-TDM group proposes a definition of Indications for TDM of antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers and opioid substituents in psychiatric patients. Moreover, recommendations with regard to practical aspects of TDM, both for the clinicians and the laboratory staff are presented, taking account of relevant literature. This document will also serve as a basis for the continuing improvement of TDM and for a widespread harmonizing of its use.
