An improved procedure for the mild racemization of N-acyl α-amino acids has been developed, using Pd(PPh3)4 either as the pre-formed complex or by its in situ formation from Pd(OAc)2 or Pd2(dba)3 and triphenylphosphine. The concentration of the palladium complex catalyst required for effective racemization is much lower than for the previously reported rhodium based catalytic system. In addition, the racemization also proceeds more rapidly at this lower catalyst concentration.
