Abstract

This article reviews different possibilities of how (depression-) therapists and other helpers can protect themselves from stress and burnout. The stress concept is explained and related to burnout and depression in their differences and similarities. A “salamander-model” is described containing six “stress-feet” and six “salutogenesis-feet”: if there is a balance between stress and salutogenesis on the levels of person, private time, patients, collegues, supervisors as well as institution and society, we can expect to reach a good burnout-prevention and salutogenesis. Two short case-studies follow. In both cases the patient suffered from fatigue, but in one case a single counselling session was sufficient for burnout-prevention, while in the other case a problem-solving psychotherapy was indicated.
