Aldehydes were cleanly and chemoselectively protected by treatment with tert-butylchlorodimethylsilane and imidazole. The resulting O-tert-butyldimethylsilylimidazolyl aminals were deblocked under mild conditions by employing 9 : 1 CH3CN-49% HF.
