A series of polyhydroxylated phenyl vinyl sulfones was prepared by phase transfer
condensation of suitable phenyl methyl sulfones with substituted benzaldehydes. The
compounds were prepared as structural analogs of biologically active chalcones. One
of the compounds was cyclized to a derivative of 2,3-dihydro-2-phenyl-1,4-benzoxathiin-4,4-dioxide,
a heterocyclic system closely resembling flavanones.
