A series of polyammonium species, each bearing two to ten cationic sites within the covalent structure, have been synthesized. For these species quaternary ammonium sites are located in a linear array at regular intervals along a "string" backbone with free-floating anions. The polycationic species exhibit antibacterial activity using strains of E. coli.
