A bicyclo[9,3,1]pentadecatriene skeleton corresponding to a biogenetic precursor of taxol has been constructed from homogeranyl acetate by means of a biomimetic olefin cyclization with mercury(II) triflate in acetonitrile followed by TiCl4-Zn promoted McMurry cyclization.
