The direct alkylation of unsubstituted calix[4]arene 1 with various 1-hydroxyadamantanes 2 (3-R-1-HOAd, where R = H, n-Pr, i-Pr) in trifluoroacetic acid is proposed as a convenient synthesis of upper rim adamantyl substituted calix[4]arenes 3.
