A new general synthesis of nitrophenyl sulfenimines from amines is described. It is applied to glycine to prepare an electrophilic glycine equivalent for amino acid synthesis. It is also applied to normal alkyl amines giving substrates for reaction with latent nucleophilic carboxyl equivalents and an alternate route to amino acids.
