The nucleophilic ring opening of an epoxide by the dianion derived from a γ-substituted β-keto ester is examined and the stereoselectivity of the newly formed chiral centre investigated. Application of this procedure to the preparation of polysubstitued tetrahydrofuran systems is also examined.
