Aromatic ether dianhydrides 2 [e.g., 4,4′-oxybis (1,2-benzenedicarboxylic anhydride)] have been prepared by cobalt(II)-catalyzed autoxidation of tetramethyl aromatic ethers. The use of propionic anhydride/propionic acid was effective to force the reaction to completion.
