A biogenetic-type synthesis of halosterol (24-norcholesta-5-en-3ß-ol) has been accomplished by the sequence of selective epoxidation of desmosterol (5,24-cholestadien-3ß-ol), epoxide rearrangement, and decarbonylation. This transformation has also been realized with lanosterol (8,24-lanostadien-3ßol).
