An enantiocontrolled synthesis of phytol (1) has been established by reiterative application of the chiral 3-hydroxyalkyne formation reaction starting from (E)-4-benzyloxy-2-butene-1-ol (7) via (R)-citronellal (19) and (R,R)-hexahydrofarnesol [32; (3R, 7R)-3,7,11-trimethyl-1-dodecanol].
