The allylsulfonyl (Als) group is demonstrated to be a useful new protective group for hydroxy and polyhydroxy compounds. The Als group is introduced using allylsulfonyl chloride and a tertiary amine. It is stable towards deacetylation, desilylation and deacetalization and is selectively removed under mild conditions via palladium(0)-catalyzed allyl transfer to morpholine.
