A new nonbasic thiazolidine ring cleavage of penicillin derivatives with the Seyferth reagent (phenyltrichloromethyl-mercury) in the presence of iodide to give mercury mercaptides [4-(phenylmercuriothio)-2-azetidinones] is described. Subsequent in situ alkylation and acylation gives the corresponding thioesters or sulfides.
