The cyclohexadienone annulation of chromium-carbene complexes with alkynes is evaluated for its application to the synthesis of taxodione and related diterpenes. It is found that this reaction is tolerant of the steric congestion and the presence of functional groups necessary to produce good yields of decaladienones to serve as advanced intermediates in the synthesis of the tumor inhibitor taxodione.
