Cyclization of the ketophosphonate 18 was efficient and led to the thunbergols 3 and 4. Cyclization of the protected hydroxyphosphonate 28 was less efficient, but gave the cyclic ketone 29, a precursor of the cembratrienediols 1 and 2, with little racemization at C-1.
