The 2-pyrrolylsulfonium salts 2 rearrange in trifluoroacetic acid into the thermodynamically more stable 3-pyrrolylsulfonium salts 5. These can be deprotonated (R1 = H) by potassium hydroxide to give the extremely hygroscopic and relatively unstable 3-sulfoniopyrrolide ylides 6.
