Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF, 1) is tetralithiated with phenyllithium, and the intermediate is halogenated in an unusual reaction, to give the new donors tetrachloro- and tetrabromotetrathiafulvalene (TClTTF, 2) and (TBrTTF, 3).
