A Case of Umbilical Granuloma in an Infant Treated with Homeopathy
Autoren
Introduction
An umbilical granuloma is an overgrowth of granulation tissue during the healing process of the umbilicus in neonates.[1] It is the most common umbilical abnormality in neonates, causing inflammation and drainage. The etiology is not fully understood, and it may take several months to heal. It is a benign growth that develops from excessive granulation and a failure of epithelialization at the base of the umbilicus. Umbilical granulomas often develop after an infection or cord separation, when residual tissue in the navel fails to heal properly.[2] They are insensitive because they lack nerves, so they may not cause pain or discomfort to the newborn. A mass replacing the fallen umbilical cord can cause emotional distress in parents and may require medical attention.
A 3-month-old female presented with swelling in the umbilical region on November 10, 2020. The swelling was red with a slight watery discharge from the umbilical area ([Fig. 1]). There is no fever or pain. Sleep is disturbed at night. The child suffered from diarrhea 10 days back, for which allopathic medications were given. The diarrhea stopped immediately after the medications. The case was clinically diagnosed as umbilical granuloma by a pediatrician, and topical applications were prescribed without significant relief. Presenting symptoms of the case were suddenly suppressed diarrhea. Metastasis[3] [4] of symptoms (from diarrhea to umbilical granuloma), oozing from the umbilicus.[5]
